Communication series with Dr Vincent Wong (Psychiatrist) – 2.0

How to speak so that people want to listen by Julian Treasure

Julian Treasure shared 4 principles of good speaking habits in an acronym H.A.I.L.

HAIL means to greet someone enthusiastically.

  1. H for Honesty.
  2. A  for Authenticity : This means being our true self.
  3. I for Integrity :  This means to do what we say or to walk the talk. To be a person someone can trust.
  4. L for Love : To say it with love, respect and sensitivity.

I always believe that words are very powerfully in our day to day communication. It is not only what we say but equally important is how we say it.

If we are making a certain demands, we can choose to say something in a blunt and aggressive manner or we can choose to express ourselves in a direct yet respectful manner.

If we are trying to resolve a disagreement with a close friend or a family member, we can either confront with a loud voice in a heated argument or say it in a respectful and loving manner.

As the saying goes, Words can make or break us.  So the choice is ours to say it the H.A.I.L. manner.

Dental health and Mental health, which is more important?

Here is a helpful video on mental health entitled “Emotional First Aid” by Guy Winch

If we brush our teeth twice a day to take care of our dental health, we should also take care of our mental health or brain health at least twice a day.

What do you think?

1 in 4 people are affected by Mental Disorders

Below is an extract from the World Health Report 2001 by the World Health Organization (WHO)

The report is entitled ” New Understanding, New Hope”

Mental disorders affect one in four people. Treatment is available but not being used

Geneva, 4 October 2001— One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.

Treatments are available, but nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental disorder never seek help from a health professional. Stigma, discrimination and neglect prevent care and treatment from reaching people with mental disorders, says the World Health Organization (WHO). Where there is neglect, there is little or no understanding. Where there is no understanding, there is neglect.

What does Star Wars and Lord of the Rings have in common?

star wars

What do these movies, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Avengers and The Chronicles of Narnia have in common?

Each of these movies tells a story of a courageous fight and triumph of good against evil.

Besides the courageous fight, I wish to highlight that there are usually a parallel story of great friendship and bonding. No one really fights alone.

The movie, Lord of the Rings trilogy tells a powerful story of friendship and comradeship to overcome the dark force, Sauron. The heart-warming friendship between the Hobbits, Frodo and Sam is a good example. Besides, there were immense support from Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas and many more from other kingdoms which came together to defeat Sauron and his armies.

Do you have a mission in life?

Do you have fellow comrades to journey with you to fulfill the mission?

A seventeenth-century English author John Donne once quoted “ no man is an island”.  Yes. we need to be independent and take responsibility for our own well being.  However, being too self-sufficient may lead us into social isolation.  Let us put aside our differences and unite for a common mission, working together to make this world a little better.
